We all have an idea of what albums to take on a road trip, but which album can you not travel without, specifically with the demands of a road trip? What is the quintessential road trip album?

The last road trip I did, this one was crucial. It also helped knowing I was driving through their home state of Georgia.

Not even sarcasm....*sniff*...anymore. Bless you Stevie Nicks, you mysterious Siren.

One of your own making.
Most albums tend to have an iffy song or two, which is a waste of valuable disc space :)
At the moment, mine's a blend of Black Keys, Wolfmother, Audioslave, ZZ Top, Sleigh Bells, Chili Peppers, Raconteurs, Justice, Cream, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Motorhead, Tenacious D, Flight of the Conchords, Genesis and the Hives.
On other CDs (have yet to move to mp3 connectivity), there's Gorillaz, QOTSA, Glitch Mob, Awolnation, Apocalyptica, BB King, Black Stone Cherry, Bob Marley, Bonobo, Chrome Sparks, The Coral, Daft Punk, Dick Dale, Dire Straits, Disturbed, Korn, edIT, Ludovico Einaudi, Elbow, Etta James, Fat Boy Slim, Fleetwood Mac, The Fratellis, Holst, Howlin' Wolf, Jason Mraz, Hendrix, Johnny Cash, the King Blues, Led Zep, Lenny Kravitz, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Madness, Metronomy, Muse, Newton Faulkner, Nina Simone, Nirvana, Otis Taylor, Paulo Nutini, Prodigy, Python Lee Jackson, Queen, Rage Against the Machine, Ratatat, RJD2, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, the Stones, Rusted Root, Seasick Steve, Seether, Son House, Steppenwolf, Stebie Wonder, Stiltskin, Stone Sour, Tchaikovski, Tim Minchin, Tommy Sparks, Velvet Revolver, Vivaldi, the Who, Wild Cherry and Wu Tang.
There's too much variety to restrict yourself to just one album.

I like your thinking sir. The music of our proverbial people. I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Came here to post this. Great variety is key.

Frank Ocean's Channel Orange. I can't leave the house without it.

Now that would be a fun challenge for a long, multi-state trip: listen to music by bands only from the state you're driving though.

For me, it's gotta be GnR. All of it. Huge fan.
First thing I thought of was The Simpsons episode where Marge does the Themla & Louise thing with a girlfriend while jamming Jungle. Tried to find the clip, this is the best I could do, but something's a bit different from how I remembered the scene...

I do that sometimes, it's not a bad idea at all.

I also hate picking favorites, and love the Black Keys and Audioslave, and appreciate your list (I plan on checking out some of these later), but methinks you missed the point of the exercise. ; )

my 2013 Road Trip album of the year award went to:
Though you could probably put any Clutch album in there as equally great driving albums.
If it's a long boring road trip I'll throw on something by Decemberists, most of the songs are stories so it's good to listen to and keep awake. Good Folky Indie Hipsterism.
And if I'm driving around town in the work Van I'll probably throw on Descendents Somery
Greatest driving Album of All time is QOSTA Songs for the Deaf though. Anyone who disagrees is a communist.

I think I might have done, but I've never been one for albums anyway. I've always just ripped the songs I like from friend's CDs/bought the one song I like off the internet and largely ignored the rest.

We actually had this in the car for my family's 2 day drive to lake Tahoe last summer!
It made for an interesting 4 hours of the drive!
Doing over 100 on a pretty empty freeway early in the morning with "Don't stop me now" blasting out the speakers is a lot of fun, especially when the other 3/6 of your family are in a marginally faster car, and you're keeping up with them!
(note: I was not driving, I was the very loud backup singer in the co-driver's seat)

The only issue I have with it is everyone tries to sing along. Which makes for wonderful moments when you pull up to a stop light, with all the windows down, and 4 burly gentlemen are belting out Bohemian Rhapsody at the top of their lungs.

Yup, we did that, only it wasn't 4 burly gentlemen. it was two fit 5'11" tennis players and their mom howling out perfectly memorized lyrics to "We are the champions"
